The Christmas
Spider
Have you ever
wondered why it is traditional to hang a spider on your Christmas Tree, as part
of the decorations or where tinsel came from
Well as
legend has it in a little house somewhere in Germany many years ago it was
Christmas Eve and the house was being cleaned. Not a speck of dust was left.
Even the spiders had been banished from their cozy corner in the ceiling by the
housewife's busy cleaning. They finally fled to the farthest
corner of the
attic.
The tree was decorated and the children delighted.
But the poor spiders were frantic, for they could not see the tree, nor be
present for the magic of the season. Pretty soon all was quiet, so the spiders
quickly crept into the room. They all scurried up the Christmas tree, out along
each branch, filled with a happy wonder at the glittering beauty. But alas!! Everywhere they went they had left
their webs.
When Santa Claus (or the Christ Child, depending on
which version of the legend you read) arrived he encountered the web-covered
tree and somewhat of a difficult dilemma: did he keep the tree wrapped in
spider webs and disappoint the family? Santa fixed everything. He turned the
spider webs into shimmering silver strands that turned the tree into a
brilliant decoration. His action thrilled the family - and saved the spiders.
Ever since
that time, we have hung tinsel on our Christmas Trees, and according to the
legend, it has been a custom to include a spider among the decorations on the
tree.
